My Medical School Admission Statement

Perception involves all senses. The senses that allow us to embrace our environment are what make each person's life unique. I actively seek meaning for my actions and reflect on the result. This is my approach to all things, medicine aside. Doctors and artists must use all their senses to learn and to communicate. I have developed my senses to learn about my environment and share what I have learned. As an artist, I have developed my skills to find meaning in every task I undertake. I use my skills to create and share my masterpiece with others. As a student of science, I have called upon my artistic capabilities to integrate what I have learned. I aspire to use my perceptive skills in the practice of medicine.

Sight:  Vision occurs before creation. I am always brimming with energy, and art is my outlet. Graphic designing merged my artistic and analytical sides. The billboards I designed, on the streets of Bangalore, India, wished all a prosperous 2001 from the State Bank of Mysore (a premier commercial bank in India). That same year I held my art exhibition in Cafe Coffee Day, entitled Faces/ Phases of Life. At college I continued designing for the Western Herald newspaper. Attention to detail and a trained eye were my benefit.

Touch:   A gentle hug after a cathartic exchange in the gym locker room. This is not new to me. Wherever I go I find myself learning and listening. I have found that people tend to open up to me very easily. When they look at me and see honest interest and concern, trust is established. In between classes or at the bus stop, I have stopped to listen to another person's fears or ambitions. I do not believe in building bridges, because nothing separates me from anyone else other than  perspective. When others need me I am able to set my perspective aside. This has been my gift.

Taste:  The air is filled with expectancy, you can almost taste it. The Bandra Holy Family Hospital in Bombay is efficient and alive. People leave. More people replace them. I'm watching with curiosity. Where are they going? What happened? What can be done? And still more people come. They want to live. They want to be healthy. Maybe they just need comfort. So many patients - so much patience. They are waiting for the qualified doctor. Good things come to those who wait -
I feel like I am waiting with them.

Smell:  Scented talcum powder sprinkled on the bedding. It's so hot in Calicut. At least the bed sheets will feel fresh. My grandfather was sick. I did not know what to do. I was not told what to do. I just did what I felt was right. He had hurt his leg and couldn't move from the bed. I supported him. He was a tall man, but I never doubted that I would be able to lift him. Somehow I knew my own strength. My grandmother and I lifted him together. Eating, bathing, cutting nails, all required assistance. When my grandmother asked me how I felt about
all this, I told her this is my duty.

Hearing:  I am responding to the call to medicine. I believe it is my vocation. I did not start in this field. In fact in high school I ran away from anything with the word science in it. I thought I was not good at science. Since then I have matured, and I seek to understand and appreciate the processes and explanations that science offers. My experiences in Scarsdale high school, New York, have taught me to think on my feet. Randolph Macon Academy in Virginia has provided me
with leadership skills and the pursuit of excellence in all endeavors. Christ College has provided me a place to learn my culture as well as an understanding of different viewpoints. I am grateful to have an education that has been both diverse and empowering. My first focus in Western Michigan University was marketing. While studying marketing, I improved my goal setting, communication, and teamwork skills. When facing a major issue, I weigh the factors of SWOT analysis to determine the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities
and threats. Although helping people through marketing was
challenging, I believe biomedical science gives me more opportunities to make a difference. I have been successful in college because of my active integrative approach, as well as my ability to understand information presented on a variety of planes. My motto is that  individual results vary. I am an individual who strives for the best  results. I aim to better myself through my experiences. I aspire to learn from others and share what I have learned. I hope to provide a dedicated service to those who seek my advice. I sincerely believe the
practice of medicine will help me achieve these goals. The field of medicine calls upon my combination of excellence and perseverance. My dedication has already been established. I have been preparing for this my whole life. I am ready in every sense.
